President Donald Trump renominated Jared Isaacman to be the administrator of NASA on Tuesday after previously withdrawing his nomination.
In a post on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump praised the Shift4 founder's passion for space travel and his accomplishments as a businessman.
The president did not acknowledge that he had withdrawn his prior nomination of Isaacman for the role five months ago. Isaacman was likely drawn to Trump’s attention by his association with billionaire entrepreneur and Space Exploration Technologies CEO Elon Musk, who was part of Trump’s inner circle before a falling out with the president.
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy is currently NASA’s interim administrator.
Isaacman’s “astronaut experience, and dedication to pushing the boundaries of exploration, unlocking the mysteries of the universe, and advancing the new space economy, make him ideally suited to lead NASA into a bold new era,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
The president tapped the former Shift4 CEO to run NASA in December, and then unexpectedly dropped his nomination in June, citing Isaacman’s previous donations to Democrats.
A couple days later, the Allentown, Pennsylvania-based payment processing company said in a June regulatory filing that Isaacman had been named executive chairman, and that then company president Taylor Lauber would become CEO.
A Shift4 spokesperson did not immediately respond to an email asking if Isaacman will step away from the company now that he has been renominated to run the space agency.
The NASA administrator requires Senate confirmation and it’s not clear when the legislative body will take up his nomination, or if he will face a second confirmation hearing after he was already grilled by lawmakers over his ties to Musk.
The story was reported earlier by the Wall Street Journal.
