Japanese wireless carrier to begin NFC services
Japanese wireless carrier KDDI Corp. said it will roll out its new NFC services starting later this month. According to a statement from the company, this is the first time that a wireless carrier in Japan will use the NFC Types A and B in Japan.
Japanese consumers have used NFC for some time, but Japanese carriers used a type of NFC called FeliCa that is different from the NFC standards being promoted around the world. A consortium of Japanese carriers including NTT DoCoMo, KDDI and Softbank Mobile Corp announced in December that they would be working to promote the international NFC standards in Japan for things like mobile payments and couponing.
According to the post, KDDI said it plans to construct and maintain environments for service providers to supply NFC services.
