Cardtronics to offer text-based cash withdrawals in UK

Customers won't need a debit card to withdraw cash at most of Cardtronics' CashZone ATMs in the U.K., thanks to a cardless cash service the company created with mobile cash fintech Pin4.

Cardtronics' ATMs will be the first cash machines in the U.K. to have the cardless service that allows organizations to send cash to individuals in real-time using an SMS text message, according to a Yahoo Finance report.

Businesses, charities, and government agencies can use Pin4Cash to send people in the U.K. a text message to their mobile device containing a unique code. The customer then enters their phone number, the unique code and their four-digit pin at a participating Cardtronics ATM.

The service eliminates bank transfers and cards that most organizations previously used to deliver funds to individuals but became a severe challenge during the coronavirus pandemic.

The cardless service was particularly important to credit union members in the U.K., many who are without debit cards or were unable to get cash during the pandemic. The service, used at Cardtronics ATMs makes it easier for the unbanked to access cash.

"This is our initial entry into the U.K., and we are thrilled to be partnering with the largest ATM provider in the market, one at the forefront of ATM innovation. We share with Cardtronics the common goal of ensuring access to cash for people all around the U.K., particularly for those in need during this difficult time. We look forward to expanding the uses for this solution as the crisis begins to abate," said Jim Leroux, CEO of Pin4 International in the report.
