How does a point-of-sale (POS) provider evolve into a full-scale financial services platform—without becoming a bank?
For Epos Now, a leading cloud-based POS and business management platform supporting over 80,000 SMB locations worldwide, the solution was embedding financial products directly into the software its merchants rely on every day.
To turn that vision into reality, Epos Now partnered with Adyen, a global financial technology platform that provides payment processing, business accounts, capital and card issuing through a single integration. Over the past five years, the two companies have built a unified financial stack that allows merchants to manage their entire business and financial lifecycle in one place.
To mark this milestone, Adyen's Carlos Hernandez visited Epos Now's headquarters to speak with Jason Downing, SVP of Product Management, about their embedded finance journey.
Key impact at a glance
- 80,000+ global SMB locations using Epos Now today
- 1 in 4 merchants eligible for embedded financial products
- 83% of capital users returning for additional funding
A partnership built to last
The relationship between Epos Now and Adyen has evolved far beyond a typical vendor arrangement. Following five years of joint innovation, the companies recently signed a new five-year agreement, reinforcing their shared commitment to expanding embedded financial services globally.
Working closely on product strategy allows Epos Now to bring new features to market faster. Today, 1 in 4 merchants across the Epos Now ecosystem are eligible to use at least one embedded financial product.
As Downing explains:
"We see it as a genuine strategic partnership. We have a seat at the table, our feedback shapes the roadmap and together we're bringing new capabilities to market."
Less complexity with one financial stack
Epos Now's ambition was clear: eliminate the friction of managing multiple financial providers. Instead of requiring merchants to juggle separate vendors for payments, banking and business spending, Epos Now embedded these capabilities into a single interface alongside its core POS system.
The unified platform cuts operational complexity for tens of thousands of SMBs. That simplicity resonates directly with business owners on the ground.
"It makes much more sense to have everything in one system instead of using different providers," notes the manager of a convenience store using Epos Now's payments and capital solutions.
According to Downing, integrated payments are the foundation: "Once payments are in place, adding accounts, cards, or capital becomes just another click."
Faster capital, with 83% returning for more
Accessing business finance has traditionally been slow and manual for small businesses. Epos Now Capital changes that by offering eligible merchants funding directly within the platform, using real-time payment data to streamline lending decisions. Repayments automatically adjust to daily card sales, matching the natural ebb and flow of business revenue.
To date, the capital solution has supported over 9,000 businesses globally—with 83% of merchants returning for additional funding.
"If we don't make any sales that day, there's no stress," says the owner of a specialist pet shop using Epos Now. "The repayments just happen automatically through our card sales."
Getting the timing right
Launching embedded financial products is only half the battle; helping merchants discover and adopt them at the right moment is equally critical.
Epos Now introduces payments as a core platform element from day one, surfacing products like capital and business accounts at key operational touchpoints. This contextual timing allows merchants to scale into additional financial services as their operational needs evolve.
Expanding globally
Leveraging Adyen’s global unified platform has enabled Epos Now to expand its suite seamlessly across borders. Today, the full embedded suite—Payments, Capital, Accounts and Issuing—is live in the UK, with a US rollout underway and capital solutions available across Australia, Canada, Spain and the US.
