OpenLegacy today announced the availability of OpenLegacy Hub, a modernization platform built on and integrated with Amazon Web Services (AWS) designed to help banks and other large enterprises modernize mainframe and legacy applications incrementally without downtime or business disruption. The platform provides financial institutions with a low-risk alternative to traditional “big-bang” modernization approaches that attempt to replace core systems in a single project.
For decades, banks have faced a difficult modernization challenge. Core banking and payments systems often run on mainframe technologies such as COBOL and related legacy platforms that remain reliable but difficult to integrate with modern cloud infrastructure, APIs and AI-driven applications. While many institutions recognize the need to modernize these environments, large-scale replacement projects frequently carry high operational risk and can stall due to complex system dependencies and prolonged assessment cycles. As financial institutions accelerate investments in cloud and AI technologies, these legacy environments are increasingly becoming a bottleneck for innovation.
OpenLegacy Hub addresses this challenge by enabling banks to modernize core systems incrementally while maintaining continuous operations. Rather than replacing entire systems at once, the platform allows institutions to gradually migrate business logic from legacy environments such as COBOL, CICS, IMS, VSAM, RPG, and IBM-i to AWS-native services, including AWS Transform, Amazon Bedrock, AWS Lambda, and Amazon Elastic Kubernetes Service (Amazon EKS). This incremental approach allows legacy and cloud systems to operate in parallel, giving organizations a permanent safety net during the transition and significantly reducing the operational risk associated with modernization.
At the same time, the platform exposes legacy data and business logic as secure APIs and event-driven microservices. These services allow modern cloud applications to interact directly with existing systems of record, enabling financial institutions to deliver new digital capabilities while continuing to rely on the stability of their core infrastructure. The architecture also helps prepare organizations for emerging AI initiatives by making legacy data and processes accessible to machine learning and generative AI applications running on AWS.
OpenLegacy’s platform abstracts away many of the complex dependencies in legacy banking environments and converts them into secure services accessible to modern applications. This allows banks to validate system behavior in production environments and deliver measurable business value from modernization initiatives within weeks rather than months or years.
The platform also incorporates AWS generative AI capabilities to automate several traditionally labor-intensive aspects of modernization projects. These include code analysis, copybook mapping and data transformation workflows that often slow migration initiatives. By automating these processes, OpenLegacy aims to help institutions accelerate modernization timelines while reducing the complexity associated with legacy system transformation.
AWS customers worldwide can access OpenLegacy Hub through AWS Marketplace, with planned integration into AWS Transform for Mainframe. The combined capabilities are particularly valuable for regulated industries such as banking and insurance, where modernization initiatives must balance innovation with strict requirements around reliability, security and compliance.
“OpenLegacy Hub and our continued work with AWS represents a fundamental paradigm shift helping our customers,” said Ron Rabinowitz, CEO of OpenLegacy. “OpenLegacy Hub empowers AWS customers to start small, prove value quickly, and scale modernization efforts at their own pace — all while maintaining complete operational stability. By continuing to build with AWS and advancing our shared vision, we are making enterprise transformation both accessible and successful.”
Financial institutions are already using the platform as part of their modernization strategies. Bank Leumi, one of Israel’s largest banks, has been working to modernize its core infrastructure while maintaining operational stability.
“Using AWS together with OpenLegacy allows us to transition from our mainframe toward a modern, RESTful, cloud-first architecture,” said Raya Spektor, Head of IT Infrastructure, Leumi Technologies Division at Bank Leumi. “This approach enables us to rapidly expose and migrate core business capabilities while maintaining security, stability and operational continuity. We can now deliver new digital experiences faster, simplify our technology landscape and prepare our organization for a scalable, future-ready environment.”
