
TSG and Bank of America have released their annual consumer gift card trends report, revealing a continued rise in gift card popularity and evolving consumer preferences in 2025.
According to the new data, 81% of consumers purchased a gift card in the past year, a 6% increase year-over-year. The report also highlights that 23% of consumers plan to spend more on gift cards this year than last year, with Millennials and Gen Z leading the way.
These findings were compiled from a joint survey of over 1,000 U.S. consumers* to examine attitudes, preferences, and habits regarding gift card use. This follows their study in 2024.
Key Insights
- Good for Business: 57% said receiving a gift card would prompt them to try out a new business, such as a restaurant or retail establishment.
- Gift Card Recipients: More consumers reported receiving a gift card in the last year (73%) compared to the year before (70%). Younger consumers were more likely to receive a gift card.
- Convenience of Immediacy: 78% of consumers say they send digital gift cards immediately when purchasing (vs scheduling a delivery date).
- Mixed Preferences: 1 in 3 consumers now purchase a mix of physical and digital cards depending on the occasion.
- Theme-based Designs: 63% of buyers prefer themed gift card designs over store-branded options, signaling a shift toward more personalized and occasion-specific gifting.
