Zippin to deploy cashierless technology in Lojas Americanas owned stores in Brazil

Zippin, a San Francisco-based technology company, said it entered a deal with Brazilian retailer Lojas Americanas S.A., which will use its autonomous checkout technology for its stores across the country, according to a company release.

Lojas Americanas, through its Inovacao e Futuro innovation unit, recently made an investment in Zippin to use the checkout technology exclusively in Brazil and to deploy the cashierless checkout in its Ame Go retail stores.

The stores will range from 250 to 3,000 square feet and be located in high density urban locations, according to the release. Users will be able to access the store using the Ame Go mobile app.

One store in Rio de Janiero has deployed the technology for four months, with a second scheduled to open in Sao Paulo this fall .

"Response to the Rio store has been incredible," Krishna Motukuri, co-founder and CEO of Zippin, told Mobile Payments Today via email. "We went from the original pilot phase to full public launch in less than a few months."

The store uses computer vision, sensor fusion technology and machine learning, including overhead cameras and smart shelf sensors. Shoppers can link a debit or credit card to either the retailer's mobile app or the Zippin mobile app to shop and check out merchandise.
