Ubox makes mobile vending machines a reality in China

Ubox mobile payment vending machineAsian tech blog Penn Olson has a post on Ubox, a Chinese app that lets consumers make purchases at vending machines using their mobile phones. The apps are already available for iPhones, Android devices and JAVA-based feature phones, Penn Olson reports.

The futuristic looking Ubox vending machine has one big button. Everything else is done on the user's mobile phone. (Provided the user has downloaded the app, signed-up for a prepaid Ubox account and topped-up the accounts using a UnionPay or Alipay account.)

According to Penn Olson, Ubox is working to get its machines into locations like transit stations and shopping malls across China and has reportedly received an infusion of cash from a Chinese VC firm to help it gain traction.

The post says that customers using the vending machines receive a 10 percent discount on all vended products as well as a sign-up bonus good for a couple of cans of soda.

The Ubox machines may be a sign of things to come everywhere. Both The Coca-Cola Company and PepsiCo Inc. have announced they're working on integrating various mobile technologies with vending machines.
