Twitter set to test card-linked offers

Social network also is still testing a Buy button as it enhances position as an e-commerce portal.

Twitter this week announced Twitter Offers, a way for U.S. advertisers to connect with the social network's users through card-linked promotions. The company is still testing a Buy button merchants can embed in tweets so that users can purchases items with the network.

"When users see a Twitter Offers in their timeline, they can add the offer to their credit or debit card in just a few taps, and redeem in real time by using the card at the store," Twitter wrote in a company blog post. "Because the offer is tied to their card, redemption is seamless and easy: There are no coupons to redeem at the point of purchase. After the purchase, the cash back savings appear on their card statement within a few days."

Twitter plans to test the system during the holiday shopping season. It did not reveal any plans to expand the test to other countries.

The company said merchants can use their existing payments systems to add Twitter Offers and that there is no need for a software update. Twitter did not provide additional details in the blog post.

"After users add a Twitter Offer to their credit or debit card, that card information will be encrypted and safely stored to make it easier for them to claim other offers or make purchases on Twitter in the future," Twitter wrote in the post.
