Swedish banks set for 2014 MasterPass wallet launch

Three Nordic banks — Nordea, SEB and Swedbank — have announced plans to issue MasterCard MasterPass digital wallets in Sweden in 2014. They will offer bank-branded MasterPass wallets to their customers for use on connected devices such as smartphones, PCs and tablets.

Swedish customers will be able to log in to their digital wallet with their Swedish Mobile BankID, MasterCard said.

In a statement, Mats Taraldsson, head of business development for MasterCard's Nordic and Baltic Region, said customers will be able to store all card brands on their MasterPass wallets and use them globally.

Swedish payment provider Paynova has confirmed that it will provide its merchant customers with MasterPass payment acceptance on their websites.

MasterCard said MasterPass will be launched in Sweden during the course of 2014. The payment method is currently available in Australia, Canada, the U.S. and the U.K. Other countries where MasterCard plans to roll out MasterPass include Belgium, Brazil, China, France, Italy, Israel, the Netherlands, Singapore and Spain.

Offered initially for online shopping, the MasterPass wallet will be made available later for use in physical stores, Nils Hilbard, SEB's head of strategy, said in a news release. When in-store, MasterPass will work with NFC and QR codes.
