SnapPay launching facial recognition for North American merchants

SnapPay Inc. is launching facial recognition technology for North American merchants.

The technology, based on similar systems used in Asia, allows customers to make digital payments using a digital snapshot taken during the checkout process.

"Facial recognition technology is an increasingly popular method of payment among global consumers," Spencer Xu, founder and CEO of SnapPay, said in a press release. "By enabling consumers to pay with their 'face' North American merchants, particularly those with self-service kiosks, are providing an unprecedented level of convenience and speed at the checkout process, in a lucrative customer segment that increasingly demands it."

The company cited data from Mordor Intelligence, revealing the facial recognition market is predicated to reach $9 billion by 2024, which is double from 2018. Juniper Research data shows mobile biometrics will be used to authenticate $2 trillion in remote and mobile payments by 2023.

Canada-based SnapPay, which enables merchants to accept WeChat Pay and Alipay, is demonstrating the technology at the Retail Council of Canada's Retail West Show in Vancouver.
