RBC, Bell launch Canadian mobile payments service

RBC Royal Bank of Canada and Canadian mobile operator Bell Mobility have confirmed the launch of the RBC Secure Cloud mobile payment service, enabling customers to make payments from debit and credit cards using NFC-enabled Bell Mobility smartphones.

RBC Secure Cloud offers a mobile wallet which stores customers' card credentials in the cloud. Initially focused on NFC, the wallet can also support other mobile payment methods such as QR codes.

"RBC is excited to team up with Bell to provide our mutual clients with an integrated mobile solution for debit and credit payments," Dave McKay, RBC's group head of personal and commercial banking, said in a statement when the service was first announced in May 2013.

Bell and RBC have been carrying out tests of their mobile payment service since then, and have now gone live. The service is integrated into RBC's existing mobile banking app and appears as an additional option on the home screen, together with RBC's P2P payment service that allows RBC customers to send money to any person or business in Canada.

At the time of last year's announcement, RBC and Bell said that customers would be able to make NFC mobile payments with their RBC debit or credit cards using the BlackBerry Z10, Q10, Bold 9900, Bold 9790 or Curve 9360, and a range of Android devices from manufacturers such as Samsung, Sony, HTC, and LG.

However, according to mobile industry publication MobileSyrup, the mobile payment service is currently only available on the Samsung Galaxy S3 and Samsung Galaxy S4 running Jelly Bean and equipped with NFC-enabled SIM cards. Payments can be made at locations that have Visa PayWave and Interac Flash, the Canadian contactless debit card platform. When making mobile payments with smartphones, RBC customers will earn reward point from retailers enlisted in the RBC rewards program, MobileSyrup said.
