PayPal Here to enter Japan

PayPal has announced a full-scale rollout of its mobile POS solution, PayPal Here, in Japan. The rollout will include a partnership with Japanese telecommunications company SoftBank. The solution will be available to merchants and small businesses through more than 2,700 SoftBank retail shops and business sales networks across Japan, the company said.

PayPal Here is PayPal's entry in the mobile POS market, rivaling offerings from companies such as Square and Intuit. The solution was released last year in the U.S., Australia, Canada and Hong Kong.

Not long after launching in its first four markets, PayPal announced a joint venture — the first for PayPal — with SoftBank in order to bring the solution to Japan. Both companies contributed approximately $13 million to the deal. Ten months later, PayPal Here is finally entering Japan.

The PayPal Here product offered in Japan will include the distinctive triangular shaped card-reading dongle (not the EMV card reader the company just introduced). The dongle, which fits into the audio jack of iOS and Android devices, will be offered for free. Pricing will be the same as it is elsewhere, with merchants paying 2.7 percent per transaction processed through the solution.

PayPal announced an EMV version of its PayPal Here card reader two weeks ago. The product will be sold in markets where chip-and-PIN cards are prevalent, rolling out first in the U.K. with expansion into other European markets soon after. EMV-enabled card readers, which use a PIN pad and connect to mobile devices using Bluetooth, will come at a cost to merchants.

PayPal has not announced the cost for its EMV-enabled readers, but a source at PayPal said it will be competitive with other EMV mobile POS solutions on the market in the U.K. and Europe. Those products retail for approximately €49 ($64).

PayPal currently has more than 110 million active accounts around the world. SoftBank, which provides telecommunications and wireless services in Japan, has more than 29 million wireless subscribers.
