New Google Wallet API makes mobile shopping easier
Along with dropping the Google Prepaid Card from its Google Wallet, Google is introducing a new API for the product. With the new API, checking out using Google Wallet will be easier, especially on mobile devices, the company said.
In a blog post announcing the new API , Google said that the time-consuming and error-prone process of entering data on a mobile device resulted in online shopping cart abandonment rates of more than 75 percent last year.
With the new API, shoppers who log into Google Wallet will not need to enter credit card or personal data. The information will be prepopulated into fields. What's more, shoppers who have authorized Google Wallet as a payment method for a particular site will not be redirected to a Google page. And they can even use their Google account to log on to merchant sites, Google said.
In its post, Google said there is no additional charge for merchants to accept Google Wallet and implementation is easy, since merchants maintain their relationship with their existing payment partners.
The new Google Wallet API provides a service that is similar to digital wallets offered by MasterCard and PayPal, which were also designed to simplify the process of shopping via mobile devices.
