MasterCard launches MasterPass digital service in Brazil

MasterCard has launched its MasterPass digital payment service in Brazil.

MasterPass enables consumers to make point-of-sale/in-store, online or mobile payments from any MasterPass-connected digital wallet by clicking the MasterPass button on a merchant's checkout page and entering their password.

Consumers can make payments using credit, debit, prepaid and private-label cards stored in their MasterPass-connected digital wallets, without needing to enter their card information or shipping address on the merchant's website. MasterPass works with any card brand, not just with MasterCard, and can be used on any device. According to MasterCard, MasterPass is particularly suitable for smartphones with small screens.

MasterCard says that MasterPass supports NFC payments as well as QR codes for in-store payments.

"With MasterPass, all connected devices can become shopping devices, and allow consumers to make purchases from any location," Marcelo Tangioni, vice president of Products at MasterCard Brazil and Southern Cone, said in a news release.

Among the first Brazilian online merchants to sign up for MasterPass is Girafa, MasterCard said. And Brazilian payments processor MaxiPago said it will support MasterPass-based payments.
