Libra Association names veteran Treasury Dept official as general counsel

Libra Association has tapped Robert Werner, a financial compliance expert and veteran Treasury Department official, as general counsel as it moves into the development phase of creating a digital currency. 

Werner has held several key positions within the Treasury Dept, including director of Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN), director of the Office of Foreign Assets Control and other top positions within the agency, according to a press release.

"I am grateful for the opportunity to join the Libra Association, as we work to transform the global payments landscape to empower billions of people," Werner said in the release. "I have dedicated my career to combating financial crime and helping complex organizations achieve regulatory compliance, both in government and in the private sector."

Werner recently served as founder and CEO of GRH Consulting and served at HSBC and Goldman Sachs, where he was enterprise executive for policy, privacy and regulatory relations.
