Korean Web portal to launch mobile payment system

Naver Pay is set to debut in June with partnerships from major banks and credit card companies in South Korea.

A South Korean Web portal operator plans to launch an online payment service in June with the backing of major banks and credit cards companies in the region, according to local reports and an article from the Wall Street Journal.

Naver, which owns the Japan-based app messaging service Line, will enable consumers to make remote purchases on their smartphone or computer without the need to type in a password, according to the Journal report. Users link a Naver Pay ID to a credit card or bank account information, according to the report. Naver, in turn, will create one-time virtual credit card numbers for each transaction.

Naver told local news outlets that it has partnerships in place with credit card companies such as KB, BC, Samsung, Shinhan, and Hyundai. Local banks working with the company include Kookmin, IBK, NH Bank, Shinhan, and Woori.
