Jumio powers new payment plug-in for WordPress

Payment company Jumio announced yesterday a new plug-in for its Netswipe solution that works with WordPress websites. WordPress is one of the most popular open-source blogging platforms.

Jumio's Netswipe product, introduced last month, turns any webcam into a virtual credit card reader. Customers simply hold their credit cards in front of a webcam where it is recognized and verified using secure video streaming.

How is this a mobile payment story? A spokeswoman for the company indicated that Jumio will be releasing a mobile version of its product, including an updated plug-in for WordPress blogs, in the next couple of months. The mobile version will use a smartphone's Web camera to verify and authenticate a credit card. That seems to mean that every WordPress blog could then turn any smartphone into a mobile point-of-sale terminal with no card reader attachment required.

The market for Jumio's new plug-in is considerable. Just last week, WordPress announced that 14.7 percent of the world's top million websites run on WordPress, as well as 22 out of every 100 new active domains in the U.S.

As for implementing the plug-in, according to Jumio's announcement, the new Netswipe plug-in is designed to be simple and quick to implement. Users need only download the plug-in through the Jumio or WordPress websites and configure it using their WordPress settings.

Payments are managed through a required Jumio account that is free of charge. The cost to use the service is 2.75 percent of the transaction value.
