Instacart adds Apple Pay, Google Pay in partnership with Marqeta

Instacart, one of the largest online grocery delivery platforms in North America, has added the Apple Pay and Google Pay mobile wallets as direct payment options through its shopper app.

The company will roll out Instacart Mobile Checkout over the next few months, which will allow customers to pay directly at the register without the need to use physical credit cards. The mobile checkout technology is being offered through a partnership with Marqeta, a payment card issuing platform.

"We know that for many shoppers, convenience is key," Kevin Henrikson, vice president of shopper engineering at Instacart, said in a company release. "We've heard from shoppers that they would like an easier way to pay with their phone, instead of relying on a physical payment card that could get lost or buried in their wallet."

Instacart Mobile Checkout is currently available in select markets and will roll out nationwide over the next few months.

"We're excited to partner with Instacart on Mobile Checkout, which is a great use of Marqeta's modern card issuing platform to provide a seamless user experience for Instacart's shoppers," Omri Dahan, chief revenue officer at Marqeta, said in the release. "Marqeta's platform is the first in the market to instantly issue cards into a mobile wallet, allowing Instacart shoppers to get their cards immediately and begin fulfilling orders, all while benefiting from a more secure way to pay."
