Google drops its prepaid card from Google Wallet
The rebooted Google Wallet continues to change. Google announced it is discontinuing the Google Prepaid Card that has been a part of the app since it was launched in 2011.
In a post on the Google Wallet site, Google said the decision is due to changes to the app that took effect this summer. As a part of that retooling of Google Wallet, users no longer need to fund a prepaid account or use a credit card issued by original Google Wallet partner Citi in order to pay with the app. Instead, customers can now load any of their debit or credit accounts into the app to be accessed at the point of sale, rendering the prepaid account obsolete.
Google said Wallet users can add funds to their prepaid accounts until September 17, 2012. After that, funds cannot be added to prepaid accounts and Google prepaid cards cannot be added to devices. Additionally, if a user resets the Google Wallet app, the prepaid card will be removed from the app.
After October 17, 2012, the Google Prepaid Card will disappear from the Google Wallet app and those funds will be unavailable for spending. Google said any customers with funds still stored in a prepaid account will be able to request a refund through the Google Wallet site.
