Dwolla drops fee on small dollar transactions

Des Moines, Iowa-based mobile payment start-up Dwolla announced it is getting rid of the 25 cent transaction fee for any purchase under $10.

While merchants accepting Dwolla did not have to pay fees associated with credit and debit card, that benefit was offset by the 25 cent fee on smaller purchases.

In a post on the company's website, company CEO Ben Milne said one of the reasons the company is making the change is because "the idea of Dwolla getting 25 cents for 2 dollar coffee just sounds silly." Milne said the company has a soft spot for small businesses and wants those companies to keep more of their money when getting paid.

"Money should not depreciate in value as it changes hands," Milne said.

In his post, Milne also hinted the company will have a bigger announcement on December 15.
