To help track people who have traveled in and out of Australia and could potentially infect others with the coronavirus, the National Contact Tracing Review in Australia is suggesting using consumer credit card data to trace individuals hosting the COVID-19 virus, according to a report in Finextra.

The review recommended tracers working closely with payment providers to obtain data on people who have made a transaction at a hotspot venue.

QR codes are able to record the contact details of people who attend a specific venue and through an integrated POS systems it can identify staff in attendance, goods and services exchanged and members of the public that may have been exposed to the coronavirus.

Since early on in the pandemic, South Korea has used credit card transactions to track people exposed to COVID-19. While Australia has recorded more than 27,000 cases, South Korea, with double the population of Australia, has recorded only about 30,000 cases.
